Professor Dr. Roshdi Rashed (mathematician, philosopher and historian of science) was the special guest and keynote speaker of Farhangian University in an expert meeting held with participation of a group of professors of mathematics and philosophy. Professor Roshdi Rashed, is an emeritus Professor at Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ) known as the French National Centre for Scientific Research. CNRS is the largest governmental research organization in France and the largest fundamental science agency in Europe. The meeting was attended by university academic staff, particularly teachers of the Department of Mathematics and Science. Professor Rashid elaborated on the of mathematics, and added that there is an inherent relationship between philosophy and mathematics and mathematics possesses intrinsic ability to respond philosophical questions. According to this view, for example, the philosophical issue of the infinite world is a matter which can be responded and proved by mathematical reasoning.
Responding to the raised questions in the meeting, Prof. Rashid explained that: Mathematics and philosophy can also be considered as the cause and effect of each other and none of them has been emerged earlier. Professor Rashid explained with generalities and about the formation of philosophy, especially in the 18th century and pointed to the relationship between mathematics and philosophy. He said: “Until recently it was thought that the philosophy of science and the philosophy of mathematics has no place in philosophy”. He describes the place of the philosophy of mathematics in Islamic philosophy and mentioned the significant works done by Islamic philosophers. He also referred to the history of mathematical methods and the use of modern mathematical logic as a way of dealing with the philosophy of mathematics. It is worth noting that Prof. Rashid is the holder of the UNESCO Avicenna Gold Medal in 1999 and the Medal of Honor from the CNRS and the Medal of the Institute of the Arab world as a top scientist.
